A child who requires structured literacy needs to be told the explicit rule for why and when we use the <tch> spelling for the /ch/ sound. <Tch> is a spelling option for the /ch/ sound when there is a one syllable base/root word that has a short vowel sound.
Knowing the rule and having a rule card that the student can touch and feel and pull out on demand will help the student gain fluency in this spelling convention. Exceptions to the tch rule are such, much, rich, and which. It is best to teach these words in a group under the Orton Gillingham sight word study method.
